    Default SDL Trados Suite 2009

I am thinking of purchasing SDL Trados Suite but before taking any decision I would like to get some feedback from those using it.
Can anybody that has it tell me its advantages and drawbacks? Does it take a long time to get exact translations or do I have to add a lot of content in the memory before getting some good results ? Do I have to make many corrections? I really want to know if it is worth investing what they ask for it, at least in the long term if not in the short.
Thank you in advance to anyone taking care of my post.

    Hi!

I'm using Trados 2009 for a while, and i should warn you, it changes a lot since Trados 2007...

First of all, forget about all trados applications (like TagEditor, WinAlign, etc). Now are all included in his new interface, which is very handy and has a lot of tools that help you with the translation.

Other big change, is the implementation of Translation standards like ".xliff" instead of ".ttx" files and ".tbx" for Term Base. This feature allows translator to edit Trados files using any other CAT Tool, which is great for those how can't afford the Studio.

Following the industry direction, it also have support for Machine Translations, but only with freetranslations.com service (Trados 2007 suite SP3 has a BETA of this feature and also works with Google Translator Toolkit)

One of it's new improvements is that Trados 2009 now works with PDF files directly, saving us a lot of time in convertions from PDF to DOC.

Over the internet it's available some version, if you like to give it a try ;D

BTW, SDL support still sucks... Why they don't invest in support capacitation??? maybe is time to try other CAT tool like OmegaT...

    Hope it helps!

    P.S: Sorry about my english...

    Hi, thanks for sharing...

I didn´t know about the PDFs, and how does it work? same way as any doc file? it can be any PDF? (except scanned files I imagine) or it has to be only PDFs from Word files, Indd, Quark, etc? any restriction?

Well, the XLIFF file generated with Studio 2009 is actually a sdlxliff which is a proprietary format not the industry-standard XLIFF. Meaning that unless you have 2009 you cannot share your projects with other CAT Tools or other Trados users (from older versions).. Really sucks... and BTW is buggy. We won't upgrade to Studio 2009 we'll wait for the server version to see how it goes. Honestly, Trados can be the standard in the industry but it is not the best tool.

So, basically Trados Suite is not compatible with previous versions? Doesn't it have an option to save your work as TTX instead of "sdlxliff", or export Translation Memories as TXT?

Compatibility is definitely an issue. Personally I'm thinking, this kind of change is very limiting, and it might not have been a smart move from SDL at all...
