The use of "vosotros" / "ustedes" - English Spanish Translator Org: Translation Forum � Translators Forums

Hello everybody!

I would really like the opinion of a native speaker on this matter :P. How strange it is for someone living in Latin America to hear "vosotros" instead of "ustedes" and the other way around? Could someone please give some examples on the different uses.

Hi,
I am not a native spanish speaker but i know that in some latin american countries, people tend to speak with usted (for a formal you), ustedes (this one is for multiple persons). In some other countries, such as colombia and argentina, they mostly use the "vosotros" such as "vos me entendeis?" when in another country such as venezuela they would say "usted me entiende?"

En Argentina los pronombres personales que se usan son:

Yo amo, canto, juego
Vos amás, cantás, jugás
El/Ella ama, canta, juega
Nosotros o nosotras amamos, cantamos, jugamos
Ustedes aman, cantan, juegan
Ellos/ellas aman, cantan, juegan

En Argentina no se usa nunca el "tú" en la segunda persona singular, ni el "vosotros" en la segunda persona plural.

Te aconsejo esperes las respuestas de otros foristas para que te cuenten cómo se usa en otros países de Amértica Latina, ya que en este foro tenemos el privilegio de contar con gente de todos ellos.

Hola. In México, the use of "vosotros" or "vos" practically doesn't exist. In my country the pronouns are:

Yo amo
Tú amas
Él/Ella ama
Nosotros/nosotras amamos
Ustedes aman
Ellos/Ellas aman

When we hear someone using "vosotros" or "vos" we immediately know he or she is a foreigner (or pretends to be one). Hope this helps.

Hi oana, in Spain, the use of vosotros is frequent.

So we must add to Carlos' conjugation the second person plural:

vosotros amáis

In Spain voseo and the verb conjugated like in mem's post sound definitely foreign.
