    Default Translating a birth certificate

Hi -- Does anybody have experience translating a US birth certificate into Spanish? How would you translate "certificate of live birth"? "Certificado de nacimiento vivo" doesn't sound right. I wonder if there is a template for English to Spanish translations of birth certificates that can be accessed on the internet. Thanks so much for the help!

    Hello!

As far as I'm concerned, a certificate live birth would be the same as a birth certificate so "certificado de nacimiento" would be just fine. In fact in Spanish that is the correct terminology.

    Hope it helps!

    Regards.

That's right, Gabriela. However, "nacimiento con vida" may seem useful in some contexts. Certain US certificates include questions where I used the proposed translation. But, of course, for the document title, "certificado de nacimiento" would be a perfect functional equivalent.

    Hope you find it useful!

Thank you both. I'm struggling with whether I should reflect the reality of the culture in the source document's country or the reality of the culture reflected in the target country's corresponding documents. For example, for the original birth certificate the issuing agency is the Office of Vital Records while in Spain birth records are entered in the Registro Civil. A literal translation of "Vital Records" has no correspondence in Spain. So, should I translate it as "Registro Civil"? Thank you much.

Hi Xali! It depends... I usually try to convey a translation which will be understood by the target audience (in this case, Spain). Therefore, I would go for "Registro Civil", as you suggest. Probably, in countries which are more influenced by literal translations derived from the frequent use of the English language (such as Puerto Rico or Mexico), I would have chosen to provide a more literal translation. But, again, it depends on the specific term you are translating (and, of course, context also plays an important role)... In this case, I would choose "Registro Civil" all the same...

I agree with Guadalupe, I'd choose Registro Civil too.
