Default I'm writing a letter, and I'm stuck

I'm writing a letter to my cousin in El Salvador, and dont know how to translate the word "degree", as in "college degree". Please help (thanks).

    Here is my sentence:

I'm very happy to hear that you want to get a degree.

Oh and how do you say "high school"? I think its "bachiyerato" or something like that, right?

Thanks in advance for any help!

    Hello Carolita

Depends on what kind of degree we're talking about. In Spanish we have different names for them:

    Licenciatura
    Maestria (or Master)
    Doctorado

Also, High School could be "Escuela secundaria". Bachillerato is one of the many different options within the high school. Of course if you just say "bachillerato" everybody would understand what you meant to say.

    Good Luck!

    Thumbs up degree

    Buenas,

I agree with nzaballa. For future reference, I would like to add that I have also heard the word "titulo" to refer to the university degree in general. However, this could possibly be specific to Spain.

    Hope this is helpful!

    Un saludo

    Default Titulo

I would use "titulo" also. General term for degree in something.

Hi Carolita, I checked with my Spanish coleagues, and the use "título" for degree, and "instituto" for High school.. the only thing is that sometimes the Spanish of Spain differs from the Spanish of Latin America..
