Onboard or Aboard?

Do you say "Welcome onboard" or "Welcome aboard" to welcome someone new to a team?

I think "welcome aboard" is the appropriate choice. In the Navy we always asked "permission to come aboard". I also think the two can be used interchangeably without violating any rule of grammar.



Is it welcome on board or aboard?
The adverb aboard means on board, as in on a ship, train or plane. Usually the captain will welcome you aboard ...... Aboard comes from the French phrase à bord, which has the same meaning as the English word — on board.
