Translating humour, the surviving joke
As the subject kindly says, "What’s more difficult to translate than a joke?"
This thread in particular has the objective of finding jokes that survive the translating.
For example:
Quote:
How to go from Dentist to Neurosurgeon really fast?
With a Sneeze!
In Spanish:
Quote:
¿Como pasar de Dentísta a Neurocirujano rápidamente?
Con un estornudo!
As the irrational fear for dentists kicks in (or comes back) the joke remains funny.
So I invite you all to share a joke that makes it, that survives the language barrier, that helps with the ice-breaking at meetings, that may help you in the beginning of a speech that unites us as human beings with sense of humour.

Joke of the day! El chiste del día!
Quote:
A Drunk man walks into a library and orders fish and chips.
The librarian says, "this is a library."
The man, says, "oh. Sorry." (Then in a whisper) "I'd like some fish and chips."
In Spanish:
Quote:

Re: Translating humour, the surviving joke
Chiste de la tarde! Afternoon Joke!
Quote:
Quote:
"Honey, I had the weirdest dream!, I dreamed that I found a big box and inside there was this giant diamond! and right on my birthday, ¿What could it mean?
:- I'm sure that, at dinner tonight, you will find out. Said her boyfriend winking his eye.
So that night at the restaurant, just the two of them, he hands her a little box, bursting with emotion, she opens the box, inside was:
A pocket size book: "The meaning of dreams"
Come on, contribute with a bilingual joke! If you can make a PUN bilingual joke even better!

Re: Translating humour, the surviving joke
Ok, here I go...
A child asked his father, "How were people born?" So his father said, "Adam and Eve made babies, then their babies became adults and made babies, and so on." The child then went to his mother, asked her the same question and she told him, "We were monkeys then we evolved to become like we are now." The child ran back to his father and said, "You lied to me!" His father replied, "No, your mom was talking about her side of the family."

Re: Translating humour, the surviving joke
Jajajaja!! Muy bueno!
Sumo uno más!
Quote:
I never wanted to believe that my Dad was stealing from his job as an Aircraft Marshall.
But when I got home, all the signs were there.
Quote:

Re: Translating humour, the surviving joke
Starting the week, Monday joke!
Quote:
I told my friends:
Y'all drew your eyebrows too high.
They seemed surprised to hear that.
Quote:
Les dije a mis amigas,
Se pintaron las cejas demasiado alto.
Parecían sorprendidas al escucharlo.
Have a great start Lads, Gents, and Others!

Re: Translating humour, the surviving joke
Trying to keep this alive! Night joke!
Quote:
Went to a wedding that said "black tie only" on the Invite.
But when I got there, everyone else was in tuxedos and dresses .
Quote:

A man went to the circus to find a job.
The boss asked him: What do you know how to do?
“The man says, “I…imitate birds.”
The boss answers, “Well…we’re not interested, thanks.”
…and the man flew away.

For Linguists!
Quote:
A condescending Professor at the University was giving a lecture on Linguistics for the new students
"As you may know, in our Latin based language a double negative forms a positive. In some other languages though, such as Russian, a double negative is still a negative. However, there is no language where a double positive can form a negative."
A voice from the back of the room piped up, "Yeah, right."
Quote:

Re: Translating humour, the surviving joke
Chiste del día! Joke of the day! (A bit darker than usual)
Quote:
Mom! mom! help I think the neighbors dog is dead! I was playing with him and, and, I don't know!. Yelled the child from the backyard.
Ok, Honey, calm down... first let's make sure he's dead and not sleeping, go check.
A blunt hit to the ground is heard then a grudge and a couple more. The kid comes back panting and says: "Ok, pretty sure he's dead, now what?"
Quote:
Mamá mamá! Ayuda!
Tomorrow will be a little lighter. I promise.

Because it was stuck to the chicken’s foot.

Re: Translating humour, the surviving joke
Joke of the day! Chiste del día!
Es un poco más largo hoy. It's a little bit longer today.
Quote:
"I here to get a divorce from my husband, it's been 20 years, I can't take it anymore"
"Ok, Ok calm down, said the lawyer, what happened?, did you had heated discussions?, did he cheat on you?, is he a slob?"
"No, not at all, he works hard in the farm, he never cheated, and we don't argue about anything, that is why."
"That is very strange... How come you don't argue?"
"You see, back when we got married, we came to out newly wed farmhouse riding a carriage that had his best horse 'Hero' up front, he loved that horse, they had spent their entire childhood together, one could say he loved that horse more than me.
So, we are making our way back and half way there HERO stops and wont budge, so my husband said "ONE".
After some insistence the horse started going again, then a few more steps he abruptly stopped, and the whole carriage jiggled,
So my husband walk to the horse looked it straight to his eyes and said "TWO".
Right before arriving to the farmhouse the horse stops and sits on the ground, making the carriage, the luggage and us!, fall over. My husband then went for his shotgun, aimed at the head of HERO, said "THREE!" and shot!"
WHAT ARE YOU DOING! YOU LOVED THAT HORSE, HOW COULD YOU DO THAT! IT UNBELIE... and he slowly turned, looked me in the eyes and said "ONE" ...
Quote:

Let's continue ! Tuesday joke!

"I'm sorry" and "I apologize" mean the same thing, except when you're at a funeral. -Demetri Martin
Quote:

TWO for THE PRICE OF one!!
Quote:
I need to go for a year to work overseas, could you please take good care of my grand-mother and my cat while I'm away? - Said to a friend.
Yes, sure.
Anything that happens, ANYTHING! please let me know they are very important to me and since I can't take them with me I need to make sure..
Don't worry about it! I'll send you emails and keep you updated.
So about a month goes by and the first email arrives:
"Hello, hope you are doing ok, little news, your grandmother is OK, but your Cat is dead, sorry"
Immediately the friend answers "WHAT! HOW COULD YOU BE SO BLUNT! THAT IS NO SMALL NEWS, If you have bad news like that go slowly, in different emails, like start with one saying "Your CAT climbed a tree" then in ANOTHER EMAIL "your cat came down" and then ANOTHER ONE "Sorry to inform but your cat, when getting to the street was stepped on by a truck" and so on, not so RAW "your cat is dead", GOSH !!
The friend replies, "Sorry didn't know about the number of emails and how to give you the news, by the way, your grandmother climbed a tree"
Quote:

"I think I was chosen for my capacity of motivation, all my coworkers tell me that they have to work a lot more, when I'm around"

Quote:
Two interns and their supervisor are walking through a park on their way to lunch when they find an antique oil lamp.
They rub it and a Genie comes out in a puff of smoke and says, "Each of you, get one wish"
"Me first! Me first!" says one of the interns "I want to be in the Bahamas, driving a speedboat, in great health"
Poof! gone.
"Me next! Me next!" says the other intern "I want to be in Hawaii, relaxing on the beach with my personal masseuse, an endless supply of pina coladas and the love of my life."
Poof! gone.
"You're next," the Genie says to the supervisor. "I want those two back in the office after lunch."
Quote:

A ver un intento de traducción sería:
"Hey, do you think my nose is too big?
:- it snot that big"

"- Mom, my friends in school tease me and call me a girl.
- Don't worry honey. Next time somebody calls you that, hit him with your handbag and scratch his face."

Quote:
On the Daily paper, Obituaries desk: "Mi Grandfather has passed away, so I'm here to announce it in the news, ¿How much does it cost?
Employee: Oh, I'm sorry. Well, it depends on the ammount of words.
:- Ok, How much for "Thomas Died"?
Oh, sorry, I forgot to tell you, you can put up to 5 words.
:- Ok, How about: "Thomas Died, House for Sale"
Quote:
:- Ah claro, entonces: "Murio Aurelio, Vendo Fiat Uno"

Re: Translating humour, the surviving joke
Quote:
Hey, how do spell Bullet?
:- Well, like it sounds I guess...
And he wrote: "BANG!"
Quote:
