    Default estancias

    HI GUYS,

ON THIS OCASSION, I'D LIKE TO HELP ME WITH THE WORD ESTANCIA. THE CONTEXT IS AS SIMPLE AS:

    SHE SOLD (TRES ESTANCIAS)

IN SPANISH, AT LEAT IN AREGENTINA ESTANCIA MEANS:
Se denomina estancia a un establecimiento rural. Designa a un establecimiento rural de hacendados y a la finca de tal establecimiento.
Comprende extensiones de tierras concedidas en propiedad a un sujeto o una familia. Tiene un centro edilicio que incluye viviendas, silos, establos, caballerizas o aras, bodegas etc.

SO, COULD THE WORD RANCH BE USED? RANCH IN THE PLURAL DOESN'T SOUND GOOD TO ME. OR WHAT ABOUT FARMS?
ANY OTHER SUGGESTION WOULD BE GREAT!

    THANKS A LOT
    DIEGO

Se denomina estancia a un establecimiento rural. Designa a un establecimiento rural de hacendados y a la finca de tal establecimiento.

FARM a tract of land, usually with a house, barn, silo, etc., on which crops and often livestock are raised for livelihood.

I might be wrong, but I believe Estancia can also be translated as RANCH when farming activities are no longer involved.
For example, there are old, turn-of-the-century ESTANCIAS in the outskirts of Buenos Aires that have closed their farming activities but currently serve as bread & breakfasts, or as a place where tourist can spend the day at...
I would use RANCH in those cases.

    That's my opinion, at least.

    Thanks!

    Hi Diegonel,
Feel free to check this entry at the Merriam-Webster! http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/estancia I guess you can easily use this same word, although always in italics.

An estancia could be described as either a ranch or a farm if it is used as a country residence or to raise livestock. If it is used to grow crops (agriculture) it might be called a farm but could also be called a ranch, depending on it's location.

In the eastern United States large, rural tracts used for agricultural, livestock or country living are usually called "farms". EX: the thoroughbred horse farms of Kentucky and Florida.

In the western U.S., they are called ranches, if they grow livestock or are used for large country living. However, if they are used for agriculture alone then they are called farms.

    Re: ranch house

A ranch house is the main house on a ranch.

A ranch-style house (also referred to in real estate circles as a ranch house) is a style of architecture usually single story, slightly bent in a boomerang shape with attached garage and can be small or very large on any type of lot.

Note: large homes on large tracts of land are sometimes referred to as "estates" or "country estates", usually in the northeastern part of the U.S.

Re: the original question. I would choose "She sold three ranches" if they were located in the western U.S.

    or

"She sold three farms" if they were located in the eastern U.S.

(If they were located in some other country, such as England, then I would think farm would be the better choice.)

    Diego:

In that case I would call them ranches.
