Hello!

Me again with my doubts. My Certificado de Estudios goes like this (originally in Spanish):

My English translation approach is as follows:

What do the experts think about my translation? Is it fluent and balanced? Suggestions are very welcome.

The Embassy where I'm presenting this requires literal translation, but I will present the same translation in other applications (I.E. US Fulbright).

Hi mauricio,
I wouldn't translate casa de estudios as studies house. I don't know exactly what type of education center/institution that is but I have never heard of that before. They may want you to translate literally but most important thing is that it is understood in the target language.

I think the word is curriculum, just like that.

About the "career" of Computer Sciences...in English career refers to

so, I think here it is not properly used. I am not sure about the word you should use here and keep it literal though. A native should be of more help.

I agree 100% with Sandrita. In fact I would tarnslate the frase "esta casa de estudios" as "this academic institution".


As to the word "mallar curricular" I would translate it as "acedemic program". But maybe we can get better options from our group pf friends here.

I would change the title from Studies Certificate to Certificate of Study

I would change Lawyer NAME to Attorney NAME (lawyer is the less formal job description; attorney is generally used as a title, e.g., John Smith, Attorney at Law or Attorney J. Smith...rarely, Lawyer John Smith.

I think career OK but would be better written as "in the career field of" ...or more simply "in the field of"

so I will change studies house to academic institution as suggested by Hebe, since my institution is a regular University.

Certificate of Studies is more common as suggested by Vicente. (I never know when is better to use of or change the position of the words...)

And I will avoid using career as suggested by SandraT. Using the form suggested by Vicente "in the field of".

"Certificate of..." is almost always used when speaking of the formal title of a document, e.g., certificate of health, certificate of origen, certificate of authenticity, etc.

In a general reference, in writing or in conversation, it can be called a "Studies Certificate", e.g., "she has a studies certificate from the university" or "the restaurant has a valid health certificate".

Something just occurred to me. Is this document an actual certificate, like a degree or diploma, or is it a certification from the school to another party that the student has completed the course of study? If it is a certificate, then what we have suggested is OK...if it is a statement from the school to another party, a prospective employer for example, it would be better to call it a Certification of Studies

It really sounds more fluent now. Do you think a comma after "and, as recorded in our files, his grades are as expressed below:" is necessary as well to make it clearer?

I don't think it was I who suggested got. I put was in on purpose...I don't like the sound of "got admitted". Yes, a comma after and would be more fluent I think.

Thanks for your suggestion. It makes sense the use of the preposition for as well as in, apparently for sounds better (at least for me).
About malla curricular, I'm still thinking... I'll do more research. Too many options! Probably all of them are fine.

Just a note: "got admitted" is proper English and I don't mean to offend whoever suggested it. It is just my preference to use "was".

...and I also agree with penningdcp..."for" the field of...is fine...either way actually.

Now I got it! I used got firstly and you suggested was, but in the process got confused. Haha.:D

I'm doubting about the offer you suggested "having successfully completed the required course of study" in the original document does not say I successfully completed anything (of course I did, but they didn't express it like that). Wouldn't be faking a legal document? :confused:

Yes, you are right...it would be appropriate to translate it as close as possible to the language used in the document. I think our legal translators would agree with you also.

"got admitted" is smoother as "was admitted".

change "studies house" to "academic institution". may not seem like a direct translation to you, but don't worry - it will be fine.

"habiendo cursado las materias de la malla curricular de la carrera de..."
translates to "having successfully completed the courses in the curriculum for the field of computer science engineering...".

Another suggestion is to change subjects for courses, I wasn't sure about subjects... in the curriculum.

I think "having" is one of the problems... because the paragraph goes like this "Certifies that: Mister... enrolled in... having... and... his grades are...". Without the having in the middle makes more sense to me. Maybe a comma after the year.
