Translation Problems!!

I am a graduate student set to finish my MA in English in December--- but I am having major trouble with my foreign language requirement. I need to translate an article of about two pages in about two hours (a tiny portion of an exemplar is below). Can someone help me translate this so I have something to go on, and secondly, can someone help my with snippets of my pitiful translations if I post them along with the text? (The university doesn't have any tutors available in the summer.) Thanks to anyone who can help!!! :confused:


Mark Twain o la verdad en escorzo

Esta anécdota acaso explique las cualidades salientes de la obra literaria de Mark Twain. No estando seguro de su propia personalidad, su actitud ante el mundo había de ser una de profunda y estudiada reserva, como de quien espera que de un momento a otro se presente la persona que haya de descifrarle el enigma de su existencia. Por esta razón no pudo nunca mirar el mundo en serio, creyéndose él sin poderlo evitar una posible mistificación. De aquí arranca sin duda su actitud ante la mentira. Para él esta forma de verter y de ocultar el pensamiento estaba justificada por las condiciones generales de la vida y por lo ambiguo de su propia existencia. La mentira es en gentes sanas el resultado de una incapacidad para hacer coincidir los hechos con las palabras. Es una flaqueza de frecuente ocurrencia en personas, por otra parte, de una conciencia rígida y exigente.

I am NOT the one to do this, but I'm going to try. Anybody, please help me. It's over my head before I even begin. What lie is it talking about? Worse, I don't even believe it makes sense about Mark Twain.



Perhaps this anecdote explains the salient qualities of the literary work of Mark Twain. Not being secure in his own personality, his attitude before the world was to be someone of deep and studious reserve, as of one who might hope that in a moment a person would appear who had to decipher the enigma of his existence. Therefore he could never see the world seriously, believing in it without the power to avoid a possible deception. Here, without a doubt, is the source of his attitude before the lie. For him this manner of revealing and hiding his thought was justified by the general conditions of life and by the ambiguity of his own existence. Lies, in healthy people, are the result of an inability to make facts agree with the words. On the other hand, they are a weakness occurring frequently in people of a rigid and demanding conscience.

Thank you- I've had some one fairly fluent acquaintence look at this and he couldn't get through the first half--- and no matter how hard I work on a sentence or two, it really doesn't make a lot of sense about Mark Twain (and I am getting my master's in English, I know something about him). You have helped me though to possibly see the thesis of the article, which will help me work through it. I don't know how I'm going to get it done in 2 hours!!!!!! I may post a few of translated sentences with the exemplars over the weekend if you or anyone cares to critique them- it would help me a lot!!! Thanks!!!!!:o

Pensé en eso, brevemente. Decidí que un estudiante a ese nivel probablemente tiene razones que no entiendo. Pero, lo hice para mí. Fue mi primera oportunidad hacer una traducción de algo difícil para otra persona. Es un parte de mi lección para la próxima vez.

I thought of that, briefly. I decided that a student at that level probably had his or her reasons that I didn’t understand. But I did it for me. It was my first opportunity to translate something for someone else that was difficult. I made it part of my lesson for the next time I have a class. (For my teacher to correct).

And lnh88uyhbc, bless your heart, I’m glad you got something out of the translation. Both look like Chinese to me.

What I got out of it was a miracle. I was sure the others would rip my translation apart. It can’t be correct. My teacher may not be so nice. She’s a professional translator.

His attitude to lies in general.;)

I can recall vividly Tom Sawyer convincing one of his best friends to paint a very long fence....convincing him and others with lies to do so, and making believe, this was not bad at all, the others were simply too stupid.

I think that's what the author means when he talks about his attitude to lies.

Tenemos aquí una población en crecimiento de los que hablen español. Es importante que yo aprenda, siquiera si tengo que “ir tirando” (un frase aprendí aquí en este foro). Los viejos no podemos aprender hablar otro idioma muy bien, pero si puedo tratar. Me alegre tener ayuda.

Exx, me resultó sumamente raro el uso de "dinero contante y sonante", ya que acá, en Argentina, no usamos esa expresión :p

Gracias otra vez. La verdad es la población que habla español aquí consiste de cubanos, mexicanos, personas de Centro America y, (y no entiendo por que) peruanos. Mi maestra es del Perú, pero su madre es de España. Usualmente no tengo muchos problemas con la diferencia en el idioma entre España y America. Es muy difícil para mí oír la diferencia entre acentos. Pero en España, no entienden mi trabajo: bienes raíces (o bienes y raíces en El Salvador).

Pues, hasta la fecha, no estoy seguro como decirlo en España. ¿Inmuebles? ¿Propiedades? Mi oficina es muy vieja. Vendamos solamente las propiedades sin casas - a veces, áreas muy grandes. Pero usualmente, “bienes raíces” quiere decir las casas.

¿Negocio inmobiliario? Creo que ésta es una frase bastante neutral. Ya dirás tú, Exx, qué te parece... El término "bienes raíces" se utiliza, a menudo, en derechos reales, aunque tiene un resabio de "antiguo" (al menos, a mí me suena medio antiguo). Asimismo, hay inmobiliarias que también utilizan este término para especificar el negocio.

Ya dirás, Gernt, si lo asemejarías a "real property", que es el término que se me ocurre ahora en inglés para equipararlo. A las propiedades sin casas (es decir, a la tierra) las denominamos "terrenos".

Acá en Argentina, normalmente el lugar (u oficina) que se dedica a la intermediación entre compradores y vendedores (o locadores y locatarios) con relación a inmuebles, se denomina inmobiliaria.

Actually, the character you are speaking of is Tom Sawyer. He was whitewashing the fence as a chore and convinced some other boys how much fun it was to paint until they had to try it for themselves and they ended up painting the whole fence for him (he was very convincing). ---Tom Sawyer fue muy convinciente. Wow... ahora sí que estoy perdida... No entiendo bien el negocio: ¿compras terrenos para luego venderlos? Serías como un inversor, entonces... Lo que me resulta raro es que se encarguen de los árboles y rocas como también de las plagas...

"Bienes raíces" no sería adecuado porque, inmediatamente, lo asociaríamos con inmuebles en Argentina.

Puedo entenderle. Aprendí un poco español hace muchos años en Florida central por amigos. Pero hace dos años, decidí mejorar mi español como un “proyecto para el verano”, porque hay mucha gente aquí que habla español. Me gustaría tener la habilidad de vender propiedades en español, acudir en ayuda de una persona que necesite, etc. Pero la población de personas que hablan español está explotando. De repente, no es un asunto de “me gustaría” – es muy importante. Y mi proyecto para el verano duró mas como dos años.

Compramos terrenos raramente. Usualmente hacemos las calles y hacen lotes para vender. En America, para responder a la pregunta “¿a que se dedica?”, contesto bienes raíces. Es más fácil. En España (y supongo en Argentina, si tendríamos la suerte llegar allí), contesto “vendemos propiedades”. (Mire la ortografía. Puedo aprender, poco a poco).

Me parece que el problema de comprender a qué se dedica Gernt en realidad no es tal. Al menos en México, al negocio referente a la compra, venta, alquiler, etc. de propiedades, tanto inmuebles como terrenos, se le denomina "bienes raíces". Si Gernt mencionó los árboles, ríos e incluso (jocosamente) insectos, es para dar a entender que su negocio abarca todo lo referente a las tierras, incluido lo que venga sobre ellas. No me imagino cómo podrías vender un terreno con árboles, sin vender también los árboles que hay en él.

Muchas gracias por tu aclaración. :) Es que me resulta difícil pensar en una oficina en donde se vendan terrenos propios... Por eso asemejaba la tarea a la de un inversor.

Entonces, en Argentina, le llamaría "venta de terrenos". ¿Te parece que iría bien para México? ¿Qué tal en otros países?
