Really??? Jajajjajjajajajaj...my grandma's name is Chela....
Hi Veronica,
I hope you're not suggesting a link there (lol). But seriously , is there an origin to the name in Spanish that might give me a hint? I have heard the word Chelo (m.) of Chela (f.) may denote a blond with blue eyes in some parts of Latin America.
Joel
At least in Argentina, Chela doesn't mean anything.
Sometimes it's a short for the name Marcela, or Marcelo, but in my grandma's case, her real name is Noemí....
But it's not related to beer, or blonds here.
Well I was feeling safe until you told me her real name is Noemí. Maybe abue had a secret life with beers and blonds no one is talking about it. Or maybe not; I call my wife Marus like the rest of her family but her real name is Maria Cristina. Other thant the fact that her abuela was called Marus my wife has no idea where the name came form or what it means.

My sister´s name´s Graciela, and her nickname is chela! jajaj :D
But no idea about the relationship with beer in Mexico..
anyone knows?
Hi, don't know if this can help, but i've red that sometimes chela means blond.
Here in Italy light beer (in no-dark meaning) is called blond...maybe it's the same in Mexico, who can tell...;)
Cya all
Ita
we call that beer "blonde" (rubia), and the other "black" (negra)
I've never heard beer called chela in Mexico but I know a grandmother in Costa Rica called Chela.
I assumed it was slang for abuela. Some in Mexico call their grandmother Guela and I had thought maybe Chela was another derivitive.
In Guatemala they say chela too....for example una chela bien fria porfavor....a cold beer....now where chela came from who knows?
En el D.R.A.E. aparece chele, de origen nahuatl (celic = 'cosa verde o tierna' ).
Según el D.R.A.E. en El Salvador y Costa Rica llama chela, a la 'persona muy blanca o rubia'. Quizás chela podría derivarse de esto, en alusión al color rubio de la cerveza.
Apart from being a synonim for "cerveza", in México, "Chela" is also the nickname of Marcela or Graciela, so some guys use to say "Dame una Graciela bien muerta", which actually means "Dame una cerveza bien fría" (Give me a very cold beer).
Unfortunately, I have no idea how "chela" became a synonim of cerveza.
Saludos
Jesús!!! NO se me hubiera ocurrido nunca que eso fuera cerveza bien fría!!Quote:
Dame una Graciela bien muerta.
en el DRAE también está chelo/a, proveniente del maya "chel", que significa azul y se aplica en México a las personas rubias de ojos azules. creo q por ahí debe venir la similitud: rubia = cerveza (rubia, claro).Quote:

In chile chela also means beer I guess we copied from mexicans. It is called like this cause there was tv spot or somethig which said The blond that everyone wants....In méxico a blond girl is also called chela.....so that's why.I guess
I have heard the term for chela meaning beer.
I have also heard the term chele for very light skinned. My uncle was always called "el chele", because although he had dark hair, his skin color was veeeeeeeery light!!!! Almost an albino, except for the dark hair.
Tambien puede ser derivado del ingles "chiller" ... ¿no?
Muy interestante Acme 54. Nunca pienso por este posibilidad.

you should check out "La Burra Chela" sung by Acapulco Tropical.
I love that song. jajaja:)
"Chela", in some spanish speaking countries, is just a slang word for beer. The word also means 'blondie' or golden. So, that means that it could be defined by it's color. I also know that chela is short for chelada, which is a drink that has beer, lime juice, other vegetable or fruit juices on a salt rimmed glass. Hope this helped :)
