Ni jota de idea!I have no idea!
ONE NEEDS TO KNOW WHERE THE PERSON IS FROM AND IN WHAT CONTEXT THE WORD WAS USED.
yo creo que el hombre es de Mexico. El entro el cuatro y estuvo atras de la mujer y dijo a ellla... "jota" o "joto". Creo es jota por la razon que es una mujer y no un hombre.
Susan, he only said "jota"? Jota is a dance in Spain. We need the whole sentence .
he only said "jota". No sentence. This experience was relayed to me and she was angry because she thought is meant something bad.
"yo creo que el hombre es de Mexico. El entro el cuatro y estuvo atras de la mujer y dijo a ellla... "jota" o "joto". Creo es jota por la razon que es una mujer y no un hombre."
I have heard the word joto used in Mexico for homosexual. If he called her a jota I imagine he was calling her a lesb*an.
[jota: jot, bit (no entiendo ni jota means "I don't understand a word of it.") or (no se ve ni jota means you "can't see a thing".]
vicente
"jota" is the name of a Spanish dance, yes, and also the name of the letter "J" in Spanish.
in the "diccionario de jergas" I found the same vicente mentions. no feminine...
"JOTA" definitely means 2 things
(1) The letter J
(2) A spanish(from SPAIN!!!) dance
Mexican slang
Means gay in a demeaning way- kind of like "faggot"
I don't think he did it as an insult(calling her *******) because the slang doesn' include the femimine word, unless he was a definite real idiot.
hope it helps!
Susan Durham said "he only said "jota". No sentence. This experience was relayed to me and she was angry because she thought is meant something bad."
Well, Susan's friend thought it was something bad and I'd have to agree with her. If a Mexican man walked up behind her and said only the one word (jota) then what else could he have meant? I don't think he was asking her to dance.:)
We need a Mexican to tell give us an opinion on the use of joto and jota as slang. Where is CarlosRoberto when we need him?:D
We will really never know what the man actually said or meant. All any of us can do is form opinions, which are all valid.
You are absolutely correct.Quote:

Susan should tell her friend that there are varying opinions here and let her friend decide based on her knowledge of the circumstances.

Are you sure that he didn't say idiota? That's what came to my mind.
joto means gay but to call a woman that i believe in some countries it is used it to call a woman a *******
I spoke to a friend in Mexico and she says the word does not exist there, so ¿quien sabe?.
Now I'm sort of in agreement with islasunflower. Maybe he said idiota and she just didn't hear him well.
I say we have Susan and her friend go find the guy and ask him what he said and what he meant, then come back and tell us so I can sleep at night.:D

Hi my friends, nice to meet you again.
Looking for the misterious word "JOTA" i've found out some other meanings:
In Colombia means " an infinitesimally small bit", but don't know if this could help when is referring to a woman.
Anyway, here's the link

In another search i've found out that in Spanish could be a greeting and other things that don't seem getting the point in this situation.
The link is the following:
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=jota
Hope this can help ya...i think the greetings is what your friend recieved.
Hasta luego.

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all ?
You look a lot like me !
(At least your Avatar does)...
Can i ask about a different word? What does "basofia? mean?
hi, bonitamorena. this should be in a different thread, since it has no connection with the above. anyway, the word is "bazofia" and you can find it in the DRAE. it is basically something awful, disgusting -mainly food, but it can also be applied to a painting, for example, a movie, etc., or to a person (it's not nice at all, unless it's understood it's a joke).Quote:

I agree with Vicente, we don't have a sentence to provide context, but we do know the situation and I don't think he wanted to dance. Whether it means ******* or not, I don't think it was something good.
I agree with vicente and flacadelgado. According to this glossary of "Alternative Spanish Dictionary" :D http://www.alternative-dictionaries....sh/1.html#so80 "joto" means f a g g o t.Quote:

I've heard it used in combo with two other words to complete the expression. I can't say them here, but if he is from that area, then yes, he was upset with her about something. In my native Argentina we sometimes used that as a polite way to avoid using "jodida" which in slang means someone with a strong temperament and difficult to be around.
Hi Gentle:
Once again we find that words have different in meanings to people depending on where they are from.
I've never heard "jodida" used to describe a person but it is used as slang in Mexico to describe something worn down or in ruined condition. Like an old house that is nothing but a dump...que jodida!
I found it interesting to reread this thread that was started back in 2008. The original poster sort of disappeared while we discussed "jota" among ourselves. That used to happen quite often and we used to have some great discussions and debates.
Have a great weekend my friend!
I believe what he meant by calling her a jota is meant derogatorily and if it's the female version of joto which is a derogatory term (fag) for a gay man then it would mean the feminine equivalent!
