How to localize "Onomástico" to North-American and British English?
Tomorrow (April 24th) is my birthday and a colleague said: "Felicidades por el onomástico"
This article written in spanish explains a little of the meaning and difference https://larepublica.pe/ocio/507587-a...-de-cumpleanos
Like "name day", Do any of you know about this?
Any English native speaking forum members care to give a little hand, and maybe tell us about how it is approached in your country?

To my knowledge as a native of the US (for a LOT of years;)) Onomástco, or name day, is not celebrated in the United States, although it is possible that some Catholic or Orthodox immigrant groups might recognize the practice as a carry over from their native countries, but I am not aware of any that do.
"A name day is a tradition in some countries in Europe, Latin America, Catholic and Orthodox Christian countries in general. It consists of celebrating a day of the year that is associated with one's given name. The celebration is similar to a birthday."

Interesting! I always thought they meant the same precisely because that's how people use that word in general.
I totally agree with Vicente. I think that there is no one specific word for onomástico as a celebration.
Still, that is only one of its meanings.
La onomástica is also the study of names and it origins. And onomastics is the study of theoriginsandformsofpropernames. Same thing.

But while the institution itself doesn't exist, one must still make the effort I think, even if it loses some or most of its original meaning.

El onomástico refiere al día de cumpleaños o al día del Santo de una persona?

I've also heard people syaing "Happy return of the sun"
It kinda gives your name day/birth day a more poetic meaning.
Is this the sort of answer you were looking for?

Celebran onosmatico las personas que tienen el mismo nombre de un santo.
El cumpleaños es el nacimiento de esa persona.
Significado de la REA: cumpleaños significa ‘aniversario del nacimiento de una persona’, pero onomástico significa 'día en que una persona celebra su santo’.
