zanjas de coronación
can anyone better this?
... construir zanjas de coronación para evitar derrumbes...
... construct transversal crown trenches to .....
i have temporarily added the transversal in case crown trench isn't most used technical term...
these are drains/trenches installed above exposed slopes to prevent slope failure
Cheers,
Damien

Re: zanjas de coronación
To the uninitiated, the term, "transversal crown trenches," is ambiguous. A diagram is needed for clarification.
Nevertheless if these drains or trenches are built to prevent earth or rock slides, they most likely will be: "Drenes contrafuertes."
Now "drenes contrafuertes" are "transversal" to the centerline of the highway (not to the slope, as one might imagine). So check the context of your article and preferably inspect any diagram it might have to verify that the "transversal crown trenches" alluded to are in fact drains slung down from the top of the slope to the highway shoulder (to be expected logically).
If they are, translate them as "drenes contrafuertes" (singular: "dren contrafuerte").

cheers ed,
but i don't think the contrafuerte would have fitted as they are not necessarily reinforced for structural/physical retention of the slope, just runoff diversion...
anyway the text i settled on... (and already submitted!) went ".... construct crown trenches running down the ridge lines above exposed slopes to avoid slope failure induced by surface runoff.", with the bolded type added to reduce ambiguity.
thanks for the effort,
Damien
