Re: Yes We Créu Translation
Well .. you got the full idea about what it means
there is no such literal translation for "créu"
it was an invented word by popular people
but I disagree it means "fuck" .. we do have a very specific word that means that
and the word "créu" is so common these days that I've seen children around their parents using the word...
it is a funny way to say you "got it"
I went out with that girl and "créu" her: that means I had *** with her
I went to that test and "créu" it: that means I got most of the questions, it was easy
I "créu" the opportunity: that means I was selected for the opportunity
ok it is most used in Rio... but a very famous Funk Music brought it to our routine as we had a lot parody of this music
there is one very famous where the author mixed the increasing taxes subject to show we got "créu" by the government, in this case, he wanted to avoid the word "fuck" but meaning the government fucked us all increasing the taxes: http://charges.uol.com.br/2008/01/17...danca-do-creu/
And I doubt who started the "Yes We Créu" had intentions to offend Obama or USA, that was just a joke, a nice one for our context that only brazilians will get its spirit
Re: Yes We Créu Translation
Very interesting!
What I wrote was what I found on Internet, but I am not a portuguese native speaker, so I appreciate your answer!
Re: Yes We Créu Translation
"Créu" is an onomatopoeia that imitates the sound of biting something hard. It's used in Brazilian Portuguese to refer to an accomplishment, as in the case of the phrase "Yes, we créu", which I'd translate as "Yes, we did it."
It's frequently used with sexual innuendo. Remark that, as in Spanish, in Portuguese verbs always end with '-ar', '-er' or '-ir', so "créu" cannot be used directly as a verb, so one generally uses the expression "dar um créu" to refer to sexual intercourse, e.g, "Ele deu um créu nela"/"He ****ed her".
Re: Yes We Créu Translation
Thank you Gabriel!
Your explanation of both meanings was very clear and it was very interesting to learn that it comes from the onomatopoeia for the sound of biting something hard.
We, the non brazilians, are trying to understand what is behind the phrase.
:)

Re: Yes We Créu Translation
Well...i can translate the words for you,but YES WE CREU dont have a portuguese version...because the phrase is a direct reference to Obama's slogan,here i go:
Yes = sim
We = nós
Creu = No translation
