Problem with Trados and an OCR converted text
Hello,
I need to translate a file that was originally a pdf. I converted it to word with Solid Converter. Then I opened the word file with Tag editor. Surprisingly, Tag Editor inserts tags between the letters of each word, which makes translation impossible. Does anybody know how to fix this or what other way I could use to translate the file with Trados?
Thanks
Re: Problem with Trados and an OCR converted text
Hello,
I think the fastest way is to open the word document, select all the text and then press ctrl+spacebar to clear all the formatting and styles that might be causing these tags to appear. Now save the file again and open it in TagEditor.

Paul
Re: Problem with Trados and an OCR converted text
Hi Paul,
Thank you for your help. The problem is that when you see it in Word, there are no spaces within words. Tags appear in Tag Editor, but in word, the words look fine.
Re: Problem with Trados and an OCR converted text
Hi,
Maybe this is hidden formatting in Word. Did you try what I suggested? This will remove all formatting so you have plain text. Tag Editor will not add tags where there are none in the source document.

Re: Problem with Trados and an OCR converted text
Hello Paul,
I tried what you suggested. The problem is that this solution would increase the DTP costs a lot, because I need to keep part of the formatting for this particular project.
Thanks for your help.

Your only hope is to contact a German speaking person.

Hi Andrea,
This is unfortunately one of the problems in having to deal with pdf documents as source. If you had a copy of ABBYY FineReader or similar software that is designed for specifically for handling pdf documents then you may be able to get a better source document with less effort first. I think it is reasonable to add some costs onto the rate you charge for handling work like this because of the dtp time involved.

Paul
