An emoticon is a short sequence of keyboard letters and symbols that simulate facial expressions. The first emoticon, the smiley, appeared in September 1982 when Scott Fahlman proposed it to an Internet chat group. Since then hundreds of emoticons have been fashioned from simple keystrokes.
