In what countries is soccer called football?
Fundamentally, most countries who play their own nationally-invented football codes call association football by the name of "soccer". This, of course, is to differentiate the football sports in common everyday language usage among the people - so that the local game is favoured by the term "football".
Almost all, if not all other countries in the world other than the US and parts of Canada, Australia and South Africa, call the game "football". Since very recent times, the governing bodies in Australia and South Africa are called Football Associations, but the sport is referred to as "soccer" by the vast majority in these nations.
Re: In what countries is soccer called football?
Interesting but confusing. Football should be called football all over the world!
Re: In what countries is soccer called football?
Don't agree with you, Ignaciog. In the U.S., when you say football people automatically think about the NFL.

I know that! I am just saying that football (soccer) should be called football all over the world. I ma not saying it is a fact, just saying it should be like that!

Re: In what countries is soccer called football?
Very interesting question. I hope someone finds out as I am curious to know the answer. I too automatically think of the NFL whenever football is mentioned. I am a huge NY Giants fan although I hail from Hawaii. Go figure...LOL! I am pretty competitive and so football season around my house is quite vocal and lots of fun.

Soccer is called football in the most of European and Asian countries (England, Germany, Spain, Russia and others).
