Hey Gernt! In my neck of the woods a basket case is a nut, a crazy person, a nuerotic, an emtionally unstable person, etc.

Una persona que no puede hacer nada would be an incompetent, a failure, a bumbler, a loser, etc.

I don't know. I don't think I ever use it seriously. I might say something like "We'd like to join you, but after keeping the kids all day, the wife's a basket case".

And that's a perfect use for it. To me that would mean she is exhausted and can't even think straight. So we are in agreement...I just misunderstood what you meant by not being able to do anything. Cheers
