Girlfriend
Hi, I've found that the word girlfriend can be used to call a female friend, however I´m not sure how to identify if they are talking about a fermale friend or a female when you are having relationship.
Please, could you tell me how to identify it.
Someone told me that when the word is written girl friend means friend but in the dictionary appear as two meanings for the same spelling.
Thanks in advance.

Differing terms used
Although nuanced, for some there is a significant difference between "girlfriend" (one word) and "girl friend" (two words), or "boyfriend" (one word) and "boy friend" (two words). In a strictly grammatical sense, a "girlfriend" or "boyfriend" is an individual with whom one shares a romantic relationship. A "girl friend" or "boy friend", however, is simply a friend identified on the basis of gender. This is sometimes also contravened by simply stating "ladyfriend" or "guyfriend". The terms "friend girl" (and "friend boy") are also sometimes used to indicate a platonic friendship.

Re: Girlfriend
Since this was posted in the English to Spanish translation, I guess you want to know how to clarify that in Spanish:
Girlfriend (a female friend): Amiga
Girlfriend (meaning relationship): Novia
Hope it helps

Re: Girlfriend
Hi there,
The explanation by Michelle is great, but what happens if you're not reading, what about if you're listening to a conversation or watching a movie...??
Then you should pay attention to the whole context in order to understand or to "catch" the real meaning.

Re: Girlfriend
Actually I was once told by a teacher that the difference is in the way it's pronounced. That's what she said at least. 'Girlfriend' is stressed at the beginning, like this: ['gɜ:lfrend], while 'Girl friend' has a stress in the 'friend' part. It's really sutil, and I don't know if native english speakers make that difference or not, I haven't really noticed... But, as far as I know, that's how you can tell the difference... If you can! :D
I hope this helps... And I hope I'm right! =)
