What a surprising comment! I don't find Spanish similar to English at all!!
Sometimes what I think is connected to Spanish is German language.
Why do you say this? What examples can you give us?
I agree with dranmr. Spanish is really different from English. Some words are similar but that's all. In terms of grammar, spelling and phonetics they are pretty different. Why do you think they are similar?

English and Spanish are similar from a certain point of view, but to say they are so similar is rather an overstatement.
Please explain what you mean.

I've read The Canterbury Tales, Foros, and yes, some sounds are similar to those in Spanish. But also to German. And taking into account that Modern English has roots in German, and German has some similar sounds to those in Spanish (remember that German has many many similarities to Latin, declensions is one strong example of that), I dare say that Modern English is similar to German more than to Spanish as for sounds at least.

In any case, don't you think that English and Spanish are converging, so to say, as American English tends to use more latin derived nouns and verbs? (e.g. elevator sounds closer than lift...)
I agree, Gentle. And also note that in AmEnglish they are using the question word order such as in Spanish, you can hear that in American movies more and more nowadays. But I would not say that English and Spanish are similar, I can say that languages are undergoing a process of mixture due to globalisation.
I don`t found any word in Spanish which is similar to English. Both are different.

There are so many words:
e.g.
- pronunciation / pronunciación.
- colour / color.
- professor / profesor.
- person/ persona.
- invitation / invitación.
- reserve / reserva.
...
etc.
Many words seem similar (ie 'cognates' and 'false cognates') becuse they are both derived from words with latin or greek root meanings.
examples:
true cognates: decide and decidir, both have the same root and meaning.
false cognates: advertisement and advertencia. They do have the same root, but have diverged meanings. 'Advertisement' in english is to announce/promote something. In Spanish 'advertencia' is more along the lines of a warning, reminder or piece of advice.

Great! False friends or cognates. Even "cognate" is a word of Latin origin. We need to remember that England was part of the Roman Empire as well as Germany (The Holy Roman Empire) so, it is not strange that German, English, Spanish , Italian or some other language have similarities among them.
