I think she meant an equivalent expression, not a literal translation.
POLISH es tambien un verbo que entre sus muchos usos se refiere tambien a civilizar, educar, refinar, etc. (see thefreedictionary.com). Asi que you veo que la probable traduccion es "no puedes educar a una mierda (de gente)"
mi pequeño aporte, no tengo claro el contexto pero si se refiere a una situación, podría ser: no se puede ocultar/disfrazar la verdad"y si se refiere a una persona, la expresión equivalente sería "la mona, aunque se vista de seda, mona queda", pero repito, habría que ver el contexto.
