It shall be used to ensure that the machine or equipment is stopped, isolated from all potentially hazardous energy sources and locked out before employees perform any maintenance or servicing where the unexpected energization or start up of the machine or equipment or release of stored energy could cause injury.

The procedure does not replace nor does it relieve responsibility for compliance with any other procedures that maybe required. This procedure is intended to be used with the equipment Operating Manual.

Special Considerations:

A single qualified operator can safely perform the lockout tagout procedure. It is recommended that no persons should try to perform the lockout tagout procedure without proper training.

The lockout tagout is issued on any project, which has the risk of releasing any energy either by someone energizing the equipment or by opening, closing valves or internal energy being released while the equipment is being worked on.

The authorized employee is the person responsible for the completion of the project.

All employees, upon observing a machine or piece of equipment, which is locked out to perform servicing or maintenance, shall not attempt to start that machine or equipment.
