I can't provide any useful information on that regard, but I guess the differences show how much the American society care about becoming intellectually independent from their background... kind of what happens in Italy, uh?

Frankly, I have always thought that learning English would be very difficult because some of the wacky spelling. Like though, through and other words that have "extra", and to me, unnecessary letters.
That's why I love Spanish. It is so much more sensible.
Another factor might be that early Americans weren't that educated. After all, many of them, probably the majority, were peasants without property who fled poverty and tyranny. I know that in the case of proper names taken during very early census years there was a LOT of serious mis-spelling and they tended to go with phonetic spelling. That might be one reason why so many words were changed.

Vicente is correct in that many people back then simply had no education, in fact some were unable to write their own name resuting in some of the differences in spelling there too. But there was more than english spoken to add to the confusion and at one time the German language was almost made the official language here. Other languages such as Scottish gaelic added to the mix and we get our word "galore" from "gu leor" in gaelic.
I also agree that english is somewhat a whacky language but take a look a gaelic sometime. The word "dhachaid' means "home" and is pronounced like "Yaqui" in spanish. The letter B sounds like P when it is used in the middle of a word and "mh" sounds like "V".
I would venture to guess that the current American spelling more or less evolved over time as many other languages did.

I believe that a language does not change consciously, surely also influenced U.S. aboriginal peoples fairly, as well as in Latin countries for each different is Spanish speaking, so did English in USA, i think.
I totally agree 100%b with Vicente's post from March, 2008.
American English has grown steadily in international significance since World War II, parallel to the growth of U.S. political, economic, technological and cultural influence worldwide.

Hello! very interesting discussion. I've read that there were several attempts, in written form, to create a new spelling system different from the British one, for they considered it misleading. That's why centre is center, or neighbour is neighbor. I recommend a book entitled "The story of English". It's very clearly explained!

Así es, tal y como tú lo planteas, parece ser que en la práctica uno "des-aprende" los contenidos que se deberían incorporar en la escuela.
En español, hay una evaluación oficial constante sobre la corrección de la redacción y la capacidad de comprensión de los alumnos. En los últimos años, se ha reflejado en estas evaluaciones a nivel nacional lo que observas tú con el inglés: hay demasiados errores de ortografía y se confunden conceptos básicos.
¿Por qué?
Bueno, los pedagogos están evaluando los planes de estudio y sus resultados. A priori, consideran que es muy importante el alto impacto negativo que tiene en la redacción de los alumnos el "lenguaje chat", que es la forma en la que los jóvenes se comunican por escrito a diario y en forma constante en los mensajes de texto SMS y en las salas de chat.
Para abreviar, en el lenguaje chat se cambian consonantes y luego el alumno adquiere el mal hábito de escribir en la escuela con la consonante incorrecta (algo que en un primer momento recordaba: era la consonante incorrecta, pero luego, con el uso, lo olvidó y la incorporó como correcta).
En Wikipedia, hay un interesante artículo sobre este nuevo lenguaje tan ampliamente usado y que es casi incomprensible para quienes no viven en la inmediatez de la comunicación de los SMS.
Van algunos ejemplos de lenguaje chat:
Llámame: yamm
Mándame un mensaje luego: M1ML
Mucho: mxo
Por favor: pls
Pequeño: pkñ
Te mando un mail: t@
Saludos: salu2

Es muy notorio también el uso de la k en lugar de la q, que lamentablemente se aplica a cualquier palabra. Creo que no solo influye enviar mensajes de texto, sino tambien que los chicos leen cada vez menos y no ven reflejado lo que aprenden en la escuela. Dicen que para aprender una palabra hay que verla en contexto al menos dieciséis veces.

La limitación de caracteres de ciertos sistemas de mensajería instantánea sumado al objetivo global de inmediatez de todos estos sistemas de comunicación ha dado como resultado que las letras que forman grupo con otras como: "qu" sean reemplazadas por letras que se utilizan solas y constituyen un único carácter: "k". En otro de los ejemplos que vemos arriba, la "ll" es reemplazada por la "y" por la misma razón.
Tu otro argumento es también irrefutable: es la práctica la que permite incorporar los conocimientos. Sin práctica, todos olvidamos lo que aprendemos rápidamente.
Tal y como lo sintetiza el viejo refrán la práctica hace al maestro.
De hecho, así están estructuradas las clases de cualquier disciplina: el docente plantea los nuevos conocimientos o una inquietud y rápidamente presenta diversos ejercicios prácticos en los cuales el alumno deberá aplicar los nuevos conocimientos. La lectura es el ejercicio clásico para incorporar vocabulario y fijar las normas de gramática.
Y es justamente la práctica "académicamente incorrecta" del lenguaje chat la que es, en parte, responsable de la fijación (por la práctica constante) de los errores ortográficos.
Frente a este panorama, será cuestión de canalizar y aprovechar el gran interés que despierta la comunicación inmediata.
Ya se han sugerido botones de corrección de los textos para corregir el mensaje antes de su envío en forma rápida. Seguramente aparecerán en nuestra pantalla a la brevedad.
Habría que ver cómo trata este botón de corrección el sinfín de abreviaturas nuevas que se han generado.
Los EMOTICONES realmente merecen un apartado especial.
El valor de una imagen en relación con las palabras es un tema por todos conocido y es la bandera oficial del lenguaje chat: la inmediatez de la comunicación.
Algunas conversaciones ya ni usan letras, son caritas con distintas expresiones.

En algún punto son útiles las abreviaciones, hay otras cosas que son modas de escritura cómo "qu" por "k" como menciona clegnazzi, eso para la gente a la que le gusta escribir bien es un choque.
El chat por alguna razón es un escenario que para muchos es ideal para olvidar el 100% de sus conocimientos de ortografía.

Es así, las abreviaturas aportan fluidez en la comunicación y la fluidez aporta una solución o respuesta "oportuna" para cada situación, problema o propuesta. ¡Es un magnífico aporte!
La desventaja es que con tantas abreviaturas e, incluso, la omisión lisa y llana de muchas palabras que incluyen ideas importantes, puede llegar a confundirse algún detalle o dato importante de la conversación. Como tú dices, hay gente que prefiere "confirmar" la conversación con lenguaje chat mediante una breve charla telefónica o mediante email, es decir, prefieren confirmar el detalle o dato de interés por algún medio alternativo sin lenguaje chat. Seguramente, en este caso, la persona que levanta el teléfono para hablar alega que el lenguaje chat es útil, pero "entrecortado".
Este es un ejemplo de posible confusión con tanta abreviatura para una idea:

Sí, definitivamente tanta abreviatura termina siento totalmente contraproducente, muchas veces leyendo mensajes de gente que escribe así uno se traba muchísimo.
Creo que habría que lograr el tan anhelado y difícil equilibrio:
Utilizar abreviaturas claras para todos (de uso frecuente) a fin de dar fluidez en la conversación, pero SIN omitir palabras ni conceptos para no generar confusión.
Por ejemplo, en los ejemplos que vimos en la página anterior, considero que si el contexto no es clarísimo, no se entendería en una conversación la abreviatura "M1ML" (mándame un mensaje luego).
Y no se entendería porque una oración completa con una idea muy importante queda ultraresumida en la primera letra (o número) de cada palabra. El contexto es lo que aclara esta expresión, por ello, debería ser muy claro.
En cambio, abreviar "que" por "q" no afecta las ideas más importantes y aporta fluidez con la abreviatura.
