Hi there, I was wondering if anyone could be helpful and translate this into spanish, as I can't do it without making it sound wrong. The sentence is,
" Since then, the Socialist government has had its fingers badly burned at the negotiating table and is likely to be cautious about repeating the experience."

Desde entonces al gobierno socialista no le ha ido muy bien en la mesa de negociaciones y es probable que sea cauteloso para no repetir las malas experiencias.
"To have one's finfers burned (or burnt)" da más la idea de recibir un castigo o una crítica por algun acto inaceptable que se haya cometido.

Estoy de acuerdo con Garbi. Si bien el término pudiese significar castigo en algun contexto, en este caso me parece que tener problemas o que no le vaya bien es más apropiado en este contexto.

In my native Argentina we would have written: "Desde entonces, el gobierno socialista se ha quemado con leche en la mesa de negociaciones, y es probable que tome precauciones para no repetir la experiencia". This way it's implicit the reference to the idiom: "Quien se quema con leche...¡Ve la vaca y llora!" I suppose there might be another way to express this same thing in some of the other flavors (dialects).
Coincido con Gentle. La idea es que el Gobierno socialista alguna vez en el pasado hizo algo mal y ahora está tomando sus precauciones para no seguir cometiendo el mismo error. Algo así como "tropezar dos veces con la misma piedra", pero eso sería la última parte de la oración. En realidad no encuentro un correlato exacto para ese idiom que sea de un registro medianamente formal.
