Default Agnese Haury Institute

Has anyone here attended the Agnese Haury Institute? I am making future plans in going there, but would like to get some information from someone who has already attended.

It's at the University of Arizona and seems to have a great reputation as one of the best and longest running instruction centers in T & I.

Hi Ecuanime,
I´ve never heard about the Institute you mention, but I know that the Monterey Institute of International Studies in California excels in the Translation/Interpreting field. I hope this tip helps!

Thumbs up Agnese alumni

I attended in 2003. It's expensive, and it's a very intensive, fast paced three week program (for court interpreters; medical interpreters only get a week), that covers a large amount of information, so be ready to study, study, study. Tucson is desert and lovely, but it is very hot in July, which is also the monsoon season in Arizona, so take your bathing suit AND an umbrella. If you know nothing about interpreting, don't go because you will be frustrated, as it is geared to those that are already studying to be, or are in the profession and have some kind of experience. On the other hand, you will learn a great deal in a very short time, from some very good instructors (who are also highly experienced interpreters). They test you in the beginning and again at the end, to give you experience in interpreter exams and so that you can see what kind of progress you make. It's a very popular training for those that seek to take and pass the federal court interpreter exam. Good luck.

That's good advise vivayoyis, I was looking at the same program as well. Do you think it prepared you well for interpretation? Ecuanime, did you decide on a program yet?

Thank you vivayoyis and sarahb for your response.

To sarahb, I will take introductory courses in T & I in the fall at Durham Tech in North Carolina and receive a certificate. And I was thinking of following up with that by taking courses at the Agnese Haury Institute.
