Default Coste vs Costo

I've always wondered why in Spain they say "coste" instead of our Latin American word "costo"...Is it a new word they've acquired after the conquest of America or has it been used for ever and so we, Americans, changed it as time went by? I wonder...

La diferencia en el sentido es muy sutil, más bien está dada por su uso, como bien lo indicas, y por lo visto, en España ya se ha usado así a lo largo de su historia... ¿un caso de preferencia lingüística?
