Esta expresión se emplea normalmente para decir que una cosa está hecha sin medida. Antiguamente, en los diferentes reinos existía una total falta de reglamentación a propósito de los sistemas de medidas. La frase hace referencia a las medidas de capacidad de las cubas destinadas a contener agua, vino u otro líquido. Las cubas eran fabricadas una a una por el cubero, y su capacidad venía determinada por el reino en el que tuviera montado el negocio e incluso por las diferentes normativas de medidas dictadas por los señores feudales.

No dice la fecha pero al menos nos da la referencia...
