Default check Spanish sentences for my PhD research

    Dear Spanish native speakers,

Would you please be so kind as to check the below sentences and give me some feedback if necessary. It's important that the sentences are grammatically correct and make sense. I am aware that some of the verbs are usually used reflexively (pronominal), but that's not the point. I need to know if the sentences are ok as they are written. If you detect any mistakes (e. g. tense) please correct them. Thanks a lot for your help.

Default Re: check Spanish sentences for my PhD research

    1. El cocinero aficionó a los jovenes a la comida sana

Technically it's OK, but as you pointed out, I just never use aficionar in a transitive way, so I would say: El cocinero hizo que los jovenes se aficionaran a la comida saludable.

    4. Muchos problemas económicos acuciaban el país

I have never, ever used acuciaba. It seems to me it should be used in positive situations and not in relation to problems.

Maybe you want to say El país acusaba muchos problemas económicos, meaning that El país tenía muchos problemas?

    5. El FBI aduce que la pareja se comprometió a recuperar las joyas

    adujo

    6. Sara aferró la barandilla del porche con las dos manos

    se aferró a

    7. Estos problemas graves afligen a la familia

    graves problemas

    10. Los albos amalgamaron efectividad con resto físico

    resto? meaning what?

    12. Los especilistas aparearon dos Pandas para evitar la extinción de estos

    su extinción

    13. Fernanda apoquinó la mosca

I don't know what you are trying to say here.

    14. La embajada asiló a muchas personas

    Also, dio asilo

    17. La habanera compasó el tiempo de su adolescencia

I don't understand this. Compasar as in medir?

    19. Rosaura denegró los pantalones blancos

tiñó de negro? Denegrar no existe.

    22. Domingo destorció la barilla

    varilla

    25. Las discrepancias entrañaron la disolución del parlamento

No pondría entrañaron sino condujeron a.

    29. La bolsa experimenta alza

    un alza

    35. El albañil mulló la pared con el taladro

mullir is used with soft things not with hard things like a wall.

    36. La pareja sorbió el café en silencio

sorber is Ok, but why not beber?

    37. La asociación cuenta ya medio siglo de vida

    con medio...

Most of your sentences are OK.

I didn't know 80% of the verbs you are using here. Never heard of them and had to look them up. Most of them sound as made-up verbs.

Sentence 15 and 38 are the same.

    Saludos,

Default Re: check Spanish sentences for my PhD research

Thanks a lot, Cotty. I appreciate your help. What I´m trying to do here is find out why certain verbs do not passivize, which is why I have to make up sentences with all those verbs, even though some of them are very uncommon or weird.

    13. Fernanda apoquinó la mosca

I don't know what you are trying to say here.

apoquinar apparently means 'to cough sth up.'

    17. La habanera compasó el tiempo de su adolescencia

I don't understand this. Compasar as in medir?

Yes, culled this example from a corpus.

    19. Rosaura denegró los pantalones blancos

tiñó de negro? Denegrar no existe.

    Sorry, that should read denegrio

    36. La pareja sorbió el café en silencio

sorber is Ok, but why not beber?

I´ve already got a sentence with beber

Which brings me to another question. I´ve got 15 verbs left for which I haven´t been able to find example sentences. Can anyone think of sentences using these verbs? The important thing here is that the verbs are used transitively (i. e. not reflexively).

    abarquillar
    acodar
    amanerar
    avezar
    befar
    cizañar
    desaviar
    descerrar
    deshabituar
    espigar
    fondear
    infatuar
    listar
    mondar
    pacer
    poder
