Dear people,

Now I'm fighting with the term "enclosure" again! Could you please tell me how would you translate it, for Latin America?

I'm translating some User Manuals for Computer' systems, so the "enclosure" is actually the case of the machine.

Hi there,

"Enclosure" proves to be difficult in many contexts, nevertheless, "cubierta de la computadora" (ordenador in Spain) should do the job, if not, you could consider "caja de la computadora".

You can definitely say "cubierta".

PS: In Chile, we call the computer "computador" (masculine). Don't ask me why! We also say "mantenci�n" instead of "mantenimiento" (If you ever need to localize something for the Chilean market.)

Would the viewing community consider "el cajon de la maquina" to be a valid application? Or perhaps "la tapadera de la maquina"? Many times it is possible to suggest alternatives in the copy of the literature to broaden the scope of understanding for the reader.

Per the Oxfordo-Duden Pictoral it would be "la caja" for computer housing.

In some countries: "Caja de la computadora" = "Gabinete"

I have never heard "enclosure" used in English in reference to a computer "box" or "container". When dealing with computers, wouldn't the word "enclosure" mean what's inside the box, or booklet, etc? Unless the text referred to "the computer's enclosure", in which case the words mentioned in previous posts would be appropriate. Why didn't the author just say "box" then? Just a thought.

thank you for your help. Honestly I don't know why, but the manufacturer wrote "computer's enclosure". So, I'm sure that refers to the external box of the machine.

I think that "carcasa" could be good...Is that a good word for Latin America?

If we are talking about the metal cover that shields the innards of a computer, Pol�mero got it right. "Gabinete" is the only correct term.
