    Cool Charito

    Hi all:

My name is Carolyn but a lady from South America keeps calling me Charito. Another lady from Colombia calls me Charito also. Being from Puerto Rico, raised in the island for many years, nobody ever not even at school or at home called me Charito. I know that to other women they would call them Charito if their name was Charitin. Is this a nickname for Carolyn?

Charo is short for Rosario, very frequently used in Spain.

Charito is the loving form, diminutive.

Nombre Femenino de origen Latín. Variante apocope de Rosario,
Carolyn would be Carolina in Spanish.

I have several Mexican coworkers who tell me "Charito" is slang for someone or something that has been burned or blackened, like on a BBQ grill....if i person is called Charito they may have dark skin or be African. It is a decrptive and endearing term, not meant as an insult, much like Guero is used to denote someone with very light skin..

I would say yes, it is the usual nick name for Carolina, or one of the nick names, because it can also be Caro. For Rosario, at least in Mexico I think the most common nickname would be Chayo. This may change from one country to the other and it is never written in stone how to form nick names. Never seen it in reference to dark sking, in Mexico at least.
