Hi! I would like to know which one is the best translation for "M�dico de cabecera": physician or family doctor?

Hi Mirta!
We usually use "family doctor" or "family physician," and I think they both work for this.

Another option, at least used here in Uk would be:
GP, which stands for General Practitioner.

In my country there are not many "m�dicos de cabecera" left. Those were the ones who used to go to the house of the patients to examine them and prescribe medication, and would not transfer the patients to the hospital unless it was absolutely necessary . If that is the doctor you are referring to here, then the term family doctor seems suitable

I agree with carlam, both can work, as long as they are preceded by "family".

Agreed, in the UK they are called GPs

In the US family doctor and family physician are used regularly and interchangably. GP is also used but less frequently.

I agree with carlam as well... make sure you know the target audience (UK or US)...
