I'm newer to translation and am unsure of rules regarding what should be translated and what should be left in the source language. I'm working on a document (background info: it's for a UN Volunteers report and talks about various projects that are ongoing in a particular city in Brazil) and the following questions have arisen:
-Do I translate the proper names of projects? (i.e. "PROJETO CUIDAR") -Do I translate the proper names of community centers? (i.e "Centro Espírtu Luz do Caminho" -Do I translate improper nouns, i.e. general names for centers that are capitalized in Portuguese? (i.e. "Posto de Saude") -Do I translate people’s titles? (i.e. "Secretaria Municipal de Saúde") -Is it OK to translate into English the names of academic departments in a university? -However, I don’t translate the name of the university, correct? I have an idea about the answer for some of these, but would like to confirm with another person. I know this is a lot to ask, but I would so greatly appreciate if anyone could offer insight on these points. Thanks so much and happy holidays! |
