Thread: How to use the right punctuation rules for numbers, in different languages?

HI,

I'm trying to build-up a glossary of the punctuation rules used in several languages. Here is what I got so far:

ENGLISH: In English, we use comas for thousands and periods for decimals>> 3,452,697.26

RUSSIAN: After investigating a little bit, I noticed in Russian the comas were used for decimals, and spaces are used for thousands>> 3 452 697,26

CHINESE: In both Chinese Simplified and Traditional, they use it the other way around as for the english rule, comas for decimals, periods for thousands>> 3.452.697,26

If you can help out making this glossary more complete, just hop in!

In Spanish you use periods for thousands and commas for decimals >>3.452.697,26 BUT in US Spanish you use the English mode, thus is 3,452,697.26

In Spanish we also use non-breakable spaces in numbers. Example: 234 264 385,32.

According to the RAE the numbers with 4 digits don't use punctuation. So, one thousand must be 1000 and not 1.000

Thank you for the list! I always applied the Spanish rules in French and they are not that bad.

Indeed, in fench we use "spaces" for thousands and "comas" for decimals.
