    Default dirigirse

el siguiente paso se dirigía a la conservación directa de las piezas cartográficas originales, con el encapsulado de éstas en fundas de Melinex de 100 micras y cortadas en L, para permitir su aireación

    My attempt:

the following step went in the direction to the preservation of the original cartographic pieces , with the encapsulation of these in 100 micron Melinex covers cut in L, allowing thus their ventilation

It would be clearer if you gave us also the previous sentence. Please explain to us what is the text about.

In isolation, the phrase is not completely clear to me.
I think "dirigía" here means purpose. Then I would say:
The following step is aimed to the preservation of original cartographic pieces. They are to be capsulated in 100 micron Melinex films cut in "L" to allow ventilation.

    Regards,

The text refers to the adjustment and preservation of laminae (maps, etchings, navigation charts) in the premises where they have just moved to.

'it was aimed to the preservation..." is quite useful to me.

    Thanks a lot.

    a few suggestions:

The purpose of the next/following step was the conservation of the original cartographic pieces/documents by encapsulating them in 100 micron Melinex film cut in an "L" shape to allow air to circulate.

    or
The next/following step is aimed at preserving...
...is aimed at the preservation of...

    I"m not sure about "directa".

I guess it should be "direct preservation". Check this out: Contemporary theory of conservation - Google Books
