I'm translating a travel book and I'd welcome suggestions on good translations for this passage.

"Sin embargo, nos asustan tanto ese puñado de fanaticos que decretan la persecución de escritores como los miopes y los malintencionados que tratan de hacernos creer que la cultura......"

I'm sorry but I believe both previous translations are incorrect, and might have erred by restructuring the sentence excessively. Go with something a little less literal and you'll get what you're looking.

"However, we're just as scared of this handful of fanatics who call for the persecution of writers as we are of the narrow minded and malicious people who would have us believe that culture ......"
