Default help with this phrase please

My first posting on this site. But I've already enjoyed and profited from browsing it. So, gracias anticipadas to everyone.

I would like some help please with this phrase - the context is an editorial in a Mexican newspaper which is, in turn, translated from the English

The phrase in question is - 'esquivar las pullas' as in
'lo mejor que puede hacer es negociar mientras esquiva las pullas en casa".

I would translate this as:
'the best he can do is negotiate while he avoids (dodges?) [las pullas this is the problem phrase] at home'.

hi aussiebart - i think "pullas" are like insulting "wisecracks" in english,
so i guess one translation might be "...while dodging the 'slings and arrows'
at home".
