Tengo estudiado que los nombres propios no deben traducirse en ningún caso.
Mi duda de novato es referente a un caso específico . La universidad donde he concluido mis estudios tiene el siguiente nombre en español:

hi mrei - when translating to english you would correctly say/write:
American University. also i would stipulate where it is, because there is an A.U. in washington, dc - you must avoid confusion. saludos, hermit Last edited by hermit : 05-23-2009 at 01:40 PM. |

Thanks for your reply Hermit!
I thought personal names were not supposed to be translated. Personal names like streets names or persons names. Why do you think Americana, being the name of the university, should be translated? Certainly Americana University does not sound good either. I am confused! But my first guess was to translate as you say. Mauricio.- |

you are right - as a general rule, proper names are not translated.
this can also depend on context. to whom will the overall translation be addressed? for instance, when two english speakers are talking about "the American School in Paris", that is exactly how they would say it. if they were speaking to a french-speaking person, they very well might say it in french. same thing in any language. hope this clears it up. english sure is full of exceptions to the rules. hermit Last edited by hermit : 05-24-2009 at 04:52 AM. |

hi mrei - just out of curiosity, to whom was the correspondence sent?
one always likes to adhere to the rules, but on this particular point i would think it to be of relatively minor importance. buena suerte con tus empenos. hermit |

I am in a scholarship hunting process, hehe.
Firstly these translations were/are required by the Japanese Embassy, they ask for literal translations. I guess, since Japan is not an English-speaking country, it has even less importance. But I want to make it useful for the process I'm about to begin with the United States Embassy, for the Fulbright scholarship specifically. So I will be posting about lots of doubts! I still have to translate my proposal, my thesis summary, recommendations... and I have so little time! Thanks for asking! And much more thanks for your continuous help. If you know any scholarship available for my country, Paraguay, in the computer science area (networking, telecommunications or even best, something to help humanize my career like helping persons with disabilities access to technology) it will be very welcome! I would like to have an option for Europe, I don't know any grant or scholarship for Europe available here... Well, thanks again. Mauricio.- |
