The following was posted on a chat board by a 24 year old female.

I would like to get help and opinions on:

1. my translation of her entry

2. the meaning of the word antrear

3. What message is this girl sending when she says "no confundo lo gay con perder la feminidad que es por lo que nos diferenciamos de los hombres..."

2-The word "antrear" comes from the noun "antro", it's a modern Mexican American name for pub or disco or bar.

3- I guess she means that being gay or ******* doesn't mean that you have to loose your feminity. Some people still think that if a woman is a ******* she is or she acts like a macho, which is not right.

I've learned a new word...antrear

I understood what she said but I'm trying to figure what her message was. Is she implying that she herself is gay? She says: "I want to meet girls...for friendship...for the moment, haha" Sort of like she's saying that maybe it will develop into something more involved later.

And the thing about being a gay or lesb**n and femininity makes me wonder if she isn't saying to her intended audience that she is gay but still feminine.

What else do you suppose she could be trying to say by mentioning such stuff in while introducing herself?

I definetly agree with you, Vicente. Maybe she's trying to be subtle, but that's what she says.

Ah something else... I've just learned a new word too because the verb is new to me. In Argentina it's not used at all, and the word "antro" has a very negative cognotition, for instance, "es un antro de perdición" -like a bad place- Look what I found: http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antro
http://www.antrear.com/antrear.html -seems to be very common in Mexico!!

Is lesb**n a bad word????? Why was that word replaced by **** in my post?

No Merce...lesb**n is not a bad word. It is the accepted way to say female homosexual. I don't understand why it is considered bad here in los foros (note that they also blocked it out in the following text which I got from Wikipedia)

As always Mer has done a wonderful job answering your questions, but I think you'll find that sencilla in "soy una chica sencilla" does not mean single. Sencilla means simple or uncomplicated. It's used as a positive term in Mexico meaning someone who is not snobby or arrogant.

It's interesting that young Mexicans use antrear much the same way American young people have turned the noun club into a verb by saying "let's go clubbing".

Actually, I knew the difference but had a quick mind-set that the girl was saying she was single. Sometimes you see only what you expect to see, right!? And I bet that is what Mer did as well.

I would have understood antrear too as "clubbing", even though it is not used in Spain either.

The sentence you are referring to about the gay-ness...she is obviously gay, but doesn't look like a man, as she believes in femininity.
By the way, women (normally lesbi*ns) who look like men are called marimachos in Spain.

I also concluded immediately that the girl is gay.

Now, I ask: Is there is any way, in your opinion, that she could say that she is not gay?

What I mean is, if she were a closet lesbi an and did not want to admit to being gay is there any reasonable way she could explain her way out of this?...or are her own words prima facie evidence that she is gay. Is there any room for reasonable doubt?
