How different is Spanish spoken in Ecuador from other South American/Latin American countries? I know certain words are very different. For example the word for straw in Mexico is popote, but in Ecuador it is sorbete. Anyone from Ecuador on here? gracias.

    Hi there,

Sometimes Spanish changes so much even in countries that are next to each other.
For example, in Guatemala we would use "pajilla", and the word you are refering to from Ecuador, "sorbete", means some type of ice cream.

Sometimes words are the same, but for such specific words, almost always expect them to be different in every country.

I'll write you a few more examples tomorrow night if I have time but it's late now. One thing they say only in Ecuador is "en antes" instead of "antes". It is recognized as incorrect by the rest of the Spanish speaking world but it is in common use in Ecuador. There are many words that are different in different countries and the manner of speach also can varry not only from country to country but also from region to region within a country. Ecuador is the perfect example.

That sound horrible. I think the use is exclusive to the spoken word. Never to be written on paper.
