Default rubbed off on the braid of

¡Hola a todos! estoy tratando de traducir una frase del libro de Nadine Gordimer "Some are born to sweet delight" y me tope con un problema...la dichosa frase que no me deja avanzar es la siguiente:

"They took him in. Since their son had got himself signed up at sea for eighteen months on an oil rig, the boy's cubbyhole of a room was vacant;and the rent money was a help. "There had rubbed off on the braid of the commsionaire father's uniform, through the contact of club member's coats and briefcases he relived them of, loyal consciousness of the danger of bombs affixed under the cars of members of the parliament and financiers".

Realmente no entiendo la frase. Si alguien puede ayudarme seria fantastico.
Gracias de antemano
Saludos.

Hola jec046:
