    Default Please help in translating

I have a very special Mexican girlfriend and I would like to send her this message. I have bought Rosetta stone v3 levels 1-5 but currently I am on level 1 and I haven't learnt that much yet..I could try but I would like the sentences to be as close and grammatically correct as possible, Grasias in advance.

Hey my beautiful girlfriend! How is Mexico and all the parties? You think you can drink a lot, but we both know I can drink way more than you! That tree I slept on last night at that party messed up my neck, it is so stiff. I can barely move it. It was a wild party..I have never danced so good before in my life, it was a lot of fun. I wish you were there sweetheart! I miss you more everyday sweetheart, I cant wait to hold you! I will be there soon. Your so beautiful..I see your face when I close my eyes you know? I just bought levels 4-5 for Rosetta Stone, I will learn soon! I love you more than life itself, you are the most special woman in the world, and I would do anything for you! (Except carrying your purse, that was kind of gay. I am not even going to mention the other thing.. shh that is between me and you my latina queen!)

The above posting is good, however there where a few miss-interpretations, for example ¡Hola mi compañera! is simply hello my friend, or in your context, hello my wife which is not accurate, as I gather from your above letter. Here is my version:

    Hope this helps.

    Hi copelandci,

There are a few mistakes in your translation. I can tell you're not native. For example: wife in Spanish is esposa; Girlfriend is novia, friend is amiga. Moza is a word from Spain to refer to girl and I'm not sure if it's used in other countries.
Durmiente en de árbol me molestó, mi el cuello tan tieso
this sounds like a google translation. Sorry, copelandci, I don't mean to be rude but I guess you could use some advice and that's why I have posted again.

Since the moderator has not merged the three threads yet, I will post again the translation I offered although the version offered by Sepahunt22 is pretty good.

HOla mi bella novia.¿ Cómo está México y las fiestas? Tú crees que puedes beber mucho pero sabemos que yo puedo beber más que tú.
Ese árbol en el que dormí anoche en la fiesta me fastidió el cuello, está tan rígido (el cuello). Casi no puedo moverlo. Fue una fiesta tremenda. ( I am not sure of the use of salvaje to refer to a party, at least, here it's not common)

In the original phrase to be translated the poster wrote "...I can drink way more than you."

"Way More" would, in my opinion, be translated as "muchísimo más" rather than just "más".
Had the poster simply wrote "...I can drink more than you" then "más" alone would have sufficed.

"me divertí mucho" means "I had a lot of fun", however the writer said "It was a lot of fun", therefore I translated it as "fue muy divertido". Either translation works since "it was fun" essentially means "I had a lot of fun" also, but for what I considered better accuracy I picked "fue muy divertido".

The poster wrote: "I cant wait to hold you!", and so for accuracy I translated it as "estoy ansioso por tenerte en mis brazos otra vez." rather than "me hubiera gustado que estuvieras allí" which fails to mention the 'hold' aspect like 'en mis brazos' does, although the basic meaning of having her there is the same.

    Hi Sepahunt22,

I don't know if you read my whole post but the mistakes I mentioned were not yours. In fact, I said your translation was pretty good. Anyway, here are some comments.

"Way More" would, in my opinion, be translated as "muchísimo más" rather than just "más".
Had the poster simply wrote "...I can drink more than you" then "más" alone would have sufficed.
you are absolutely right. However it does not mean that my version was wrong.
I don't completely agree. It can be translated both ways. If it was fun, it means he/she had fun. Literal translation does not always apply. It also depends on the use. Here we use "me divertí mucho" instead of saying "fue divertido". (me divertí mucho, la pasé bien, la pasé divertidísimo, la pase rico, etc.)

It is clear you did not read my entire translation.

I wish you were there sweetheart! I miss you more everyday sweetheart, I cant wait to hold you!
    this was my translation
Cariño, me hubiera gustado que estuvieras allí. Te extraño cada día más, tengo tantos deseos de abrazarte.
As far as I know in order to abrazarte, the poster has to use sus brazos.
It's just a different translation with the same meaning. And it doesn't fail to mention the hold aspect.

    and just another comment
    Acabo de Comprado
is not grammatically correct. you should say "Acabo de comprar"
y yo haría cualquier cosa para ti
although it is not wrong, the most common is to say "por ti"

I know that the mistakes that you mentioned were not mine and I know that you complemented my translation, and I also know that I didn't say that your version was wrong.

    YOU assumed that.

I'm not the one who wrote "Acabo de comprado". That was Copelandci who wrote that. Read my post before you criticize me for supposedly not reading yours.

I come to this forum to interchange ideas with others about the field of Spanish/English Translation in order to learn more and more about this most fascinating field and I will continue to do so regardless of hypersensitive individuals who may take offense at any slight thing that they choose to construe as an afront to their egos.

I'm very sorry for this. I read the wrong post. Unlike many other people, I know and acknowledge when I make a mistake.

Regarding this, you are absolutely wrong. I was just defending my version in a translation and since this is a forum for many users where everyone learns and exchanges (and reads all the posts), we must be clear and defend our versions, when we believe they are right (because others learn from them too), if not, then we apologize and instead of being sensitive about it, take it as another experience, something to learn from.

Thank you SandraT for your Critique of my translations, no I am not a native however I have learned enough about Spanish to know that there are so many variations, ways of saying things, demographics, and even just slang way to say things. I took a trip to Honduras a few weeks back and even there the Spanish is not the same as in Mexico, even different parts of Mexico can have several different ways of saying the same thing. I mean no disrespect with any of my interpretaions, and I accept that mine are not always correct (and most of the time wrong). I am simply here to help in any way I can. I am sorry to have affended you.
