Me gusta mucho esta opción. También hay un refrán o dicho popular que refleja parcialmente esta idea: "lo barato sale caro".

Hola Lynda, puedo sugerir estas otras posibilidades:

Gastar a manos llenas y hacer economías en nimiedades

Ahorrar en el chocolate del loro

(este es muy de España, no sé si se entiende o usa en Venezuela)

Difiero con mi muy estimada Hebe, no creo que signifique "lo barato sale caro".

Más bien, economizar en cosas importantes y derrochar grandes cantidades en tonterías.

Hola exccéntrica, es que topé con la siguiente interpretación de esa expresión idiomática_

Bajo ese punto de vista lo relaciono con aquellas personas que por estar economizando mediante la adquisición de cosas baratas, pierden sumas grandes de dinero ya que lo adquirido no resulta de utilidad o tiene poca vida útil: en otras palabras “Lo barato sale caro” .
Claro está, que esta interpretación la hice basada en la descripción del significado que encontré.

Hebe, yo quiero decir que para mí, la interpretación de "lo barato sale caro" apunta más a la idea de que algo "barato" cuesta mucho a lo largo de su vida por los gastos adicionales que surgen despues, que sean por reemplazar, cuidar, o mejorar en cualquier sentido. Por eso, "Pennywise, pound foolish", que habla de ahorrar en cosas pequeñas solo para malgastar mucha plata después en una tontería enorme, no encaja.
