    throw someone for a loop to upset someone unexpectedly and severely. Seeing an accident on the road always throws me for a loop.

    pero segun esta aclaración en un diccionario de "idioms" mejor que asombrar yo diria perturbar

    Se refiere al perderse en el anillo periférico (origen del dicho este) y lo equivalente, para mi, es "sacar de onda" (desorientar, confundir, ofuscar, extraviar)

    So, when something throws you for a loop, it means that it caught you offguard, that you did not see it coming and it took you by surprise.
