    eugene, as you will find, cuban spanish has its own unique words, phrases and accents. a simple search online will definitely have some good links and resources for you to check out...here is just one that might be useful http://www.cubamania.com

    there are language institutes wherever you go, so you might consider enrolling in a program while you are there. suerte!

    If you learn Spanish, you can communicate easily in Cuba, the Cuban slang you will only learn once you know some Spanish and interacting with the people here.
    There are many courses and institutions for foreigners here. I have already given advice to another member who wants to study Spanish here in Cuba.
    if there's anything else I can do for you...

    Default Cuban Spanish

    At Wikipedia you can find some information about Cuban Spanish, that actually is a variation of Caribbean Spanish. If you are fluent in Spanish you can also look for "Español caribeño" where you'll find more information related to phonology, morphology and syntax. Good look!

    If what you want to do is communicate in Cuba, you can learn Spanish here in Cuba or in another country but usually the pronunciation they teach in other countries (depending on the region, of course) is that of the Spanish from Spain.
    If you know not a word of Spanish, don't try to learn morphology and syntax of the Cuban Spanish because that way you will never learn Spanish, besides, if you do some reading related to the different ways we speak in Cuba, you will know that not all the regions, and not all groups speak in the same way. But, if you speak Spanish, they will understand you and depending on the person you are going to speak, you will be able to understand too, unless they are only using slang and that, I don't even understand myself sometimes. So, not to worry, learn Spanish and you will be able to communicate here.
    I have found this page with some explanation about Cuban Spanish but you should not use it in order to learn Spanish, this is just for your knowledge.

    Learning Spanish in Cuba is a wonderful experience, here is a link to the blog I have just written on this topic ;

    I also recently wrote about the 5 common mistakes that students make when trying to learn Spanish Five common mistakes in learning Spanish - Barclay Language Center

    Learning Spanish in Cuba – things to know

    If you are about to start learning Spanish in Cuba there are a couple of important things that you should know first that will make your learning experience a little easier.Cubans speak a little fast, but if you tell a Cuban that you do not understand what he is saying, he will try to speak slowly for you which will make it much easier to understand what he is saying.Cubans are very expressive with their movements, but do not be scared, that is their way of making you understand better, funnily enough they will also understand you better if you use your hands more than you otherwise would and make gestures with your face. Yes, it’s like being in a theatrical play…all the time. It’s funny to see, but there’s no better way to communicate with a Cuban when you’re learning Spanish than with body language.In general, Cubans omit certain syllables and consonants when they say a few words. For example, when you want to say “Quiero ir para la fiesta,” (I want to go to the party) you might hear it like “Quiero ir pa la fiesta”. The accents vary according to the region of the country, but usually the “s” at the end of the word is not pronounced. A phrase like “Ay, dios mío!” (Oh, my god!), sounds “Ay, dioh mío!”.Cubans have many colloquial words that express the same meaning, they may address you with an expression you do not know. Do not worry if someone on the street says “asere”, or “consorte”, “socio”, all those mean “amigo” (friend), or are a way to call you when they do not know your name, it is not a derogatory term.Cubans are not shy, and that makes them good teachers. Not only are they willing to listen to you, but they will not be ashamed to let you know when you are making an error in pronunciation or grammar. They will flatter you when you show that you know how to apply your knowledge.Finally, if you have a Cuban friend and you want to impress him with your Spanish, when you say goodbye, add: “chao pescao” (bye, fish). It has the same meaning as “See you later, alligator”. We assure you that he will be shocked. 😉
