In Catholic countries, and as part of the Hispanic heritage, this day has a religious meaning. Its roots are found in the Bible and the commemoration of the day when King Herod sent troops to kill all newly born infants upon knowing that the future King of Israel had been born. That's why this date is right after Christmas.

    Hello gentle

Do I understand correctly that it has a religious tone and is different from April Fool's Day here in the US in which we do things like telling a coworker they've been fired or that they've won the lottery and then say "April Fool!"?
    How is it celebrated?

    Hi Vicente,
Even though is different from the April Fool's Day, we also do these kind of jokes. Celebrations are quiet the same.

My dear friend, Vicente, I believe that nowadays there's just a few people remembering the actual source of this celebration. As a matter of fact, I agree with santiagop that today it is a day for pranks just like April Fools' is for the U.S.

I am a practicing Catholic with Protestant roots, and I seldom remember the true meaning. However, I keep an eye open if I happen to be visiting anywhere in South America.

    Thank you Santiago!

Thank you also gentle. I guess it's a bit like most of our holidays in that most people have forgotten the origins and just want to have fun. Any excuse for a party!

Nowadays, ppl are using more neutral terms such as person with limited resources for the poor and person with limited ability for the handicapped. So, maybe we can take April Fool's Day a step further and make it April Pure Heart's Day? It gives it a touch of divinity. LOL.
Ah~ Pero que hay de aquellos que sin ser puros de corazón caen en las bromas igual?
