Someone who translated some mathematics texts for us is using añadir instead of sumar for addition. I am uncomfortable with this, but not fluent enough to say that it is wrong.

Example: "añada a diferencia de fracciones"
for "Adding unlike fractions."

While we are on the subject, "unlike fractions" is being translated both as "diferencia de fracciones" and "fracciones desiguales."

Are there preferred terms here? (We are aiming at both Mexican and Puerto Rican audiences.)

I don't know about Puerto Rico, since I live in Argentina, but "añada a diferencia de fracciones" sounds translated by a machine, too literal. I think "suma de fracciones desiguales" is much better
I would also say "fracciones con distinto denominador". Hope it helps!!

I agree with veronica. The verb here is definitely "sumar" not "añadir".

I like the options "suma de fracciones desiguales " or "suma de fracciones con distinto denominador".
However, If you have more text we could give you a better help.

I agree with the last translation "(suma de) fracciones con distinto denominador".

In this page: http://www.weinheimers.com/SpanishMathGlossary.htm you can find the term, but in Mexico we use "fracciones con distinto denominador" for the same concept.

unlike fractions/fracciónes heterogéneas - Los fracciones con denominadores diferentes se llaman fracciones heterogéneas.
