Help with "Chapulines"
So Grasshopper is "Saltamontes"
and Cricket is "Grillo".... What is Chapuline? A Nickname for anything that resembles a cricket or a grasshopper? In Oaxaca people eat what Americans call "crickets" but isn't the more literal translation "grasshopper"?  Thanks for your opinions!  |

Chapulín is a nahuatl word to name "grasshoper" not cricket. For example, Chapultepec means "grasshoper hill" and aztecs used the icon of a grasshoper on a hill to represent it. Evidently, the insect is a grasshoper.

Saltamontes
They are not crickets. I have two friends from Mexico - one from Oaxaca and they both say they do not eat grillos they eat saltamontes. Chapulines is saltamontes.
