Default on the side of caution

Might there be an idiomatic way to express the "on the side of" component of the phrase "wagering (betting) on the side of caution"? In other words, an expression that is not a literal translation of the typical English phrase "on the side of"?

    Try with a prep.: desde

It's simple but it may work: - desde la prudencia - desde el respeto - desde la cordura...

I'll be translating it like this: wagering on the side of caution
apostando a favor de la cautela

I'm not sure what "betting on the side of caution" means.

How would you say "erring on the side of caution," a phrase that is much more common?

I suspect that "apostando a favor de la cautela" would be understood closest to the English phrase. However, a literal translation into Spanish would probably immediately be grasped. Thanks greatly for your thoughtful replies.

    M.:
I would translate erring on the side of caution as 'quedarse corto' or 'pecar por defecto', eventhough is more common the contrary 'pecar por exceso'
The sentence 'apostando a favor de la cautela' is nice, but I haven't seen it in Spanish.
