Default Petula Clark

Petula Clark
is a world-famous English singer.
But also a world-famous French singer...
In 1957 she sang at the Olympia theatre in France.
Asked to record in French, Petula declined at first but was quickly persuaded to do so by Frenchman Claude Wolff, whom she later married.

This little summary gives greater depth to the meaning of the next song :

Que fais-tu là Petula ? What do you do there, Petula ?

Mon ancètre Mortimer, Mortimer Peabody My ancestor Mortimer, Mortimer Peabody
Qui a fait 100 ans de guerre du côté anglais Who made 100 years of war on the English side
Est un fantôme feroce qui ne me pardonne pasIs a ferocious fantom who does not forgive me
D'avoir choisi pour mes noces un mari françoisfor having chosen a French husband for my wedding
Et Mortimer toutes les nuits en colère me crie And Mortimer furiously shouts at me every night

Que fais-tu là, Petula What do you do there, Petula?
What do you do there What do you do there?
Que fais-tu là, Petula What do you there Petula?
Loin de l'Angleterre Far from England
Que fais-tu là, Petula What do you do there, Petula?
I don't understand I don’t understand
Que fais-tu là, Petula What do you there, Petula?
Come back to England Come back to England

Remember Piccadilly
Remember Piccadilly
And Christmas pudding And Christmas pudding
Remember Tipperary
Remember Tipperary
Return to the Queen
Return to the Queen

Que fais-tu là, Petula What do you do there, Petula?
Chez nos ennemis By our enemy
Je suis mort a Fontenoy I fell at Fontenoy
Tu nous as trahi You betrayed us

Mon ancètre Mortimer, Mortimer Peabody My ancestor Mortimer, Mortimer Peabody
A perdu une autre guerre Has lost another war
Contre les Français Against the French
Il s'est si bien habitué He got used so very well
Au ciel de Paris To the sky of Paris
Qu'il ne peut plus le quitter That he can’t leave it anymore
Même pour une nuit Even for one night
Quand je vais à Londres aujourd'hui When I go to London nowadays
Mortimer me crie Mortimer shouts at me

Que fais-tu là, Petula What do you do there, Petula?
What do you do there What do you do there?
Ramène-moi, Petula, Take me back, Petula
Aux Folies Bergères To the Folies Bergères

Que fais-tu là, Petula What do you do there, Petula?
Si loin de Paris So far from Paris
Les Parisiennes, Petula, Parisiennes, Petula
Very good for me Very good for me

Leurs fantômes sont si jolis Their fantoms are so goodlooking
Moi, je veux rentrer I want to go back
Pour hanter toutes les nuits
To haunt every night
Les Champs Elysées The Champs Elysées

C'est très extraordinaire, This is very extraordinary
Ce fantôme anglais This English fantom
Qui a fini par se faire naturaliser... Who ended up having himself naturalized...

I had no idea Frank. I just love it...I will try to get more info on her. I really want to know more. Although curiosity killed the cat, that does not apply here!!
