Default El acusado fue acusado y acusado

There has to be a better way to translate the sentence "the defendant was indicted and charged with assault."

My first reaction was to use "El acusado fue acusado y acusado de agresión ..."

Pero eso suena muy feo! Me encantaria tener la palabra "acusado" solo una vez en la oracion, o talvez dos. Pero no tres!

Alguna sugerencia?

El demandado fue procesado y declarado culpable de agresión.

Gracias Maria Laura. Tu version es definitivamente mucho mejor que mi original, aunque tengo una pequena duda sobre "demandado." Seria apropiado utilizar "demandado" en un caso criminal, donde una "demanda" en el sentido estricto de la palabra no existe?
